FG: No going back on Paris Climate Agreement

The federal government says it is committed to the provisions of the Paris Agreement to fight climate change despite the withdrawal  of the United States of America.

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that the United States would withdraw from the accord.

The Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Usman Jibril, in a statement yesterday said, “I want to state categorically that Nigeria joined the Paris Agreement as a sovereign country taking into account its national circumstances and convection in a global approach to tackle climate change.”

He maintained that Nigeria was committed to the provisions of the  agreement  in accordance with its national interest.

President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change last year, saying it was to demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to a global effort to reverse the effects of the negative trend.

Buhari restated Nigeria’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions unconditionally by 20 per cent and conditionally by 45 per cent in line with her nationally determined contributions.
