2 FUTA Students Drown In School Pond Taking Selfie

Two 300level students of the Federal University of Technology Akure on Saturday drowned in the university fishery pond.
The students identified as Olabiyi Emmanuel ( department of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering) and Olokun Babatunde (department of Project Management Technology ) died after the canoe carrying four students capsized in a pond.

The students were said to had earlier taken part in a mandatory entrepreneurship practical class, after which they decided to take photos using canoe in the pond before the incident.

According to a statement released by the school authority, rescue team was able to rescue two of the students minutes after the incident, but, efforts to rescue the other two proved abortive.


The statement reads “On Saturday July 1,2017 four students of the Federal University of Technology Akure were involved in a major incident at the University fishery pond. 
The students  who had earlier taken part in a mandatory entrepreneurship practical class after the class decided to have some photo session using a canoe at the nearby pond.  
The canoe capsized and the students fell into the pond. Rescue efforts were immediately mobilised which the Dean of Students,  Professor Kayode Alese coordinated. 
Two of the students were rescued minutes after the incident. While despite all efforts two of them *OLABIYI EMMANUEL* , from the department of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering (AGE) 300level, and *OLOKUN BABATUNDE ALEX*, from the department of Project Management Technology (PMT) 300level died. 
The University is deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident. 
The parents of the students have all been notified.
 Our prayers are with them at this very trying  and difficult times and the University commiserates with them and pray that the Almighty God will grant them the fortitude to bear the painful loss.
FUTA reiterates its commitment to the safety of its students and safety measures where the the incident took place are already being reviewed in order to prevent future occurrence . 
May the souls of the departed students rest in perfect peace”
