Education is a catalyst for development - Akeredolu

The Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has inaugurated a Visitation Panel each for the  four state owned Tertiary Institutions.

At the occasion Governor Akeredolu asserted that education being the bedrock of meaningful developments, remained one of the cardinal pillars on which the structure of his administration's policies rest.

He said education constituted a vital component of the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, hence the administration recognised its importance at achieving the mission and vision geared towards the overall development of the state.

Arakunrin Akeredolu explained that the education of citizens must be purposeful if the anticipated end was capacity building.

"The embarrassing infrastructural deficit is an eloquent testimony to the yearning gap in the sorry state of our education.

"This culminates in mass production of graduates who are perpetually dependent, and functional education which addresses challenges of development," he said.

The governor added that the administration, after critically reviewing the various problems in the education sector, resolved to reposition the sector through a holistic approach and close collaboration with education stakeholders.

"This has informed the inauguration of the four panels, whose duty is to proffer solutions to identified problems in our tertiary institutions.

"The panels are to look critically into the state of compliance with the statutes which established them and approved programmes of study.

"Financial management of the institutions including Subventions, Grants, Loans and Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, and determine their compliance with appropriate regulations.

"Determine the adequacy of staff and staff development programmes of the institutions; determine the pattern of recruitment in accordance with extant statutory provisions.

"Examine industrial relations amongst management, staff, and students and recommend ways of achieving lasting peace and harmony.

"Recommend measures and actions to reposition the institution for optimal performance and consider other ancillary issues which may assist the government in taking decisions for improved performance in the sector", he said

Earlier the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Femi Agagu had noted that the exercise was in furtherance of the governor's well articulated programme aimed at repositioning education in the state.

The Commissioner also lauded the Akeredolu-led administration for the recent education summit, where stakeholders were gathered to brainstorm on how better to rejig the sector for optimal performance.
