The General Overseer of Treasure House of God, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Seye Senfuye says free education policy is outdated and irrelevant in the 21st century system.
Senfuye submitted that late Sage, Obafemi Awolowo, who introduced free education in Western Region would not emphasis free education in this era rather the sage would embrace what he called “education for independent and creativity.”
The former Accountant General in Ogun State spoke with reporters in Abeokuta on Saturday shortly after he addressed thousands of youth in the church auditorium as part of empowerment billed to kick off January, 2018.
He argued that the world has moved on from free education policy which he noted still remains basis of some political class campaign promises.
The Clergyman expressed regret that Nigeria education system and curriculum have not been reformed to accommodate present day realities.
He told the congregation comprising youths earlier that the American business magnate, Bill Gates, Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg and successful people around the world “are not product of free education.”
Senfuye said “The type of Obafemi Awolowo’s free education is good, but we have moved on from that. It is now education that gives revolution, education that brings creativity and make man to be independent; Education that will not tie him to slavery, education that will not make him pursue vanity in Libya- that type of education is needed.
“The greatest problem we have in this country is unemployment. And the type of education that the outgoing generation had was a type of education that makes you to be subservient to your system. They are the type of colonial education that was given and would make sure that the colonial masters sustain their leadership over us,” the General Overseer said.
He explained that empowerment aims to galvanise the youths across Nigeria and around the world with a view to assisting them to tackle financial challenges which according to him, deter them from realising their ideas and big dreams.
Senfuye added that the youths need to be spiritually fortified to excel in any chosen career.
“It is purely a spiritual vision. We have been doing it for the past 20 years but we have not got to this state which is now being noticed,” he added.
A resource person, Kolade Adebayo blamed poverty in Nigeria’s society on lack of commitment of the wealthy to lift the less-privileged in the society.
He called for reawakening of “people and conscience that would lead this country to a high pedestal.”
