Ensuring Road Safety Ahead Festive Period, Osun Govt Partners Regulatory Bodies, Cautions Users


As the world prepares for Christmas and New year celebrations, Governor Gboyega Isiaka Oyetola of the State of Osun has appealed to road users in the State to shun over speeding and usproperty  drugs or other intoxicating substances while driving. 
The Governor was speaking through his Special Adviser on Works and Transport, Engr Olatoke Hussein Olaniyan while addressing  journalists on Tuesday  December 2, 2019. He stated that over speeding, impatience, carefree attitudes, not paying adequate attention to road signs, non maintenance of vehicles, and use of hard drugs and other intoxicating substances among other factors have caused loss of lives and property  in Nigeria
The special Adviser, enjoined drivers to shun drinking of alcohol while driving  saying this can endanger their lives and that of the passengers. quoting the popular saying  “‘If you drink, don’t drive’, if you drive don’t drink”. 
Engr Olatoke, said the State of Osun Ministry of Works and Transport is working in collaboration with all Road Traffic Management Agencies such as the Nigerian Police, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), O’TRAM among others to ensure that road accidents are reduced drastically in Osun state. 
He also reminded motorists and okada riders that because of the impending season, harmattan dust haze would reduce visibility drastically. Therefore, poor visibility demands that speeds are reduced to the barest minimum while visible or reflective jacket and sweaters are worn by cyclists. 
“All motorists must ensure that functional traffic warning signs, brake lights, rear and side view mirrors are mounted on all vehicles”. 
Road users are further advised to cooperate with the road traffic regulatory agencies by obeying all road traffic control signs.
“While warning motorists that the penalties for traffic offences shall be applied to the letter and that the full weight of the law shall be brought on road traffic offenders”. 
 The Special Adviser commended the swift response of the road traffic regulators in the State to cases of emergency, urging them to continue with the good work.
