The Osun State Government, on Friday, notified residents of the need to take extra caution and consistently apply all the preventive measures put in place by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to prevent the deadly Delta variant of the COVID-19 especially during the festive period.

Earlier in the week, NCDC confirmed a case of the dreaded SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant in the country. The newly detected variant also called lineage B.1.617.2 was confirmed after a traveller tested positive for it in the country.

The disease control agency, has warned Nigerians not to travel if it is not necessary as Muslim faithful prepare to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebrations next week amid the COVID-19 Delta variant.

Although, the Osun State has not confirmed any case of COVID-19 Delta variant in the state but according to the Commissioner for Commissioner for Health, Dr Rafiu Isamotu, the state considered it of vital importance to notify the resident.

“With the discovery of the deadly Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus in Nigeria most especially in the neighbouring Lagos and Oyo States respectively, the State Government of Osun under the able leadership of Governor Gboyega Oyetola has considered it imperative to notify the general public most importantly at this festive period of the need to take extra caution and consistently apply all the preventive measures put in place by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

“Therefore, this is to warn the general public that the virus is still very much around us and residents of the State are hereby enjoined to continue to comply with all advisories aimed at combating the spread of COVID-19 most especially the use of face mask in public spaces, avoiding overcrowded places as well as regular washing of hands with soap and water and/or alternatively disinfecting hands and surfaces with alcohol based sanitizer among other preventive measures.

“In the same vein, the State Government of Osun hereby enjoins hoteliers, eateries, pubs, joints etc. to enforce strict COVID-19 protocols in their respective organisations.

“Failure to comply with the above will attract serious penalty as the State Government cannot afford to toy with the health of her citizenry,” he said.
