NAFDAC Bans new registration of alcoholic drinks in sachet

The national agency for food and drug administration and control has banned the registration of new alcoholic drinks in sachet and small volume pet and glass bottles above 30 percent alcohol content.

The agency says it has also stopped the registration of alcohol in sachet and small volume pet and glass bottles below 200 ml

The director general of the agency Mojisola Adeyeye through a statement says the agency remains committed to the implementation of stringent regulations against alcohol abuse nationwide and this move is decisive to reduce the availability and curb abuse of alcohol in the country.

She says that manufacturers of low volume alcohol content beverages with satisfactory laboratory reports with prior registration have been directed to reformulate their products to the stipulated standards free of charge and producers of alcohol in sachets and small volume have accepted to reduce production by 50 percent with effect from the 31st of January 2020 and ensuring a complete phase out by the 31st of January 2024.

Prof. Adeyeye insists that the agency will ensure that validity of renewal of already registered alcoholic products in the affected category will not exceed the year 2024.
