The National Examinations Council (NECO) has embarked on reforms aimed at ensuring quality service delivery and to reposition activities in the organisation, which would in turn benefit the candidates.NECO Acting Registrar, Mr. Abubakar Gana, disclosed that as part of the reforms, the examination body had commenced immediate implementation of the manpower development plan recommended by a Ministerial Committee, chaired by Muhammed Umar, a former Director of Human Resources at the Federal Ministry of Education.
According to him, the development plan is being implemented through internal postings and redeployment of personnel based on their areas of specialisation with a view to ensuring efficiency in the council’s operations. “With the reforms being implemented, NECO is fast taking its place as a reliable examination management body,” he said.
However, for the first time since its establishment in 1999, NECO released its June/July 2018 SSCE (Senior School Certificate Examination) results within 40 days of the conduct of the examination, and ended over a decade-long industrial dispute between its management and workers’ unions.
To ease off pressure on awaiting- result candidates participating in the Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination (UTME), conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), NECO had realigned its procedures and operations to ensure that results were released early to meet JAMB’s deadlines so as to avail such candidates the opportunity to secure admission.
