JUST IN: Buhari, Atiku Arrive ICC To Sign Peace Accord

President Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have arrived at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja to sign a peace accord.

Also present at the peace accord signing is Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Abdulsalami Abubakar, the chairman of the National Peace Committee.

Also in attendance is the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland; former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd); Bishop Mathew Kukah, as well as other members of the National Peace Committee (NPC).

Shortly after the arrival of the presidential candidates and others, General Abubakar called on political parties to function as effective actors for peace before, during, and after the elections.

He also appealed to them to adopt a code of conduct that would promote a peaceful process devoid of rigging.

The former Head of State, who is also the Chairman of the NPC, asked the candidates to use the remaining days left to speak directly to voters and supporters, pleading with them to avoid violence.

He explained that he was stressing this so that the nation would have no need to invite foreign observers in the future, as it is done in some countries.

Atiku was accompanied by the PDP National Chairman, Mr Uche Secondus, as well as the Senate President and Director-General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Dr Bukola Saraki, among other party leaders.

Similarly, APC National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, and some top government officials accompanied President Buhari to the venue of the signing ceremony.

President Buhari, Atiku, and other presidential candidates had earlier signed the first part of the peace accord in December last year.
