BRAVERY? -Akinwole John Akintayo

There are numerous ways to describe bravery. You can say someone who is not scared of standing up against an adversary is brave and you can also say someone who runs from a fight is brave although the latter will not be applicable at all times.
As a matter of fact, the highest form of bravery you could ever front is facing your challenges and never giving up.

Have you heard of Socrates?
Socrates is one of the most widely known people in the history of philosophy.
According to Wikipedia, “he was a classical Greek ( Athenian) philosopher credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy, and as being the first moral philosopher, of the Western ethical tradition of thought.
An enigmatic figure, he made no writings, and is known chiefly through the accounts of classical writers writing after his lifetime, particularly his students Plato and Xenophon…”

Socrates, because of holding on to his belief on some issues was by the greek government sentenced to death caused by drinking poison.
But in 1978, R.G. Frey said,  “In truth, Socrates chose to commit suicide”

Suicide? But he was sentenced to death…

Reason was that, Socrates had the chance to escape from prison. His followers could bribe the guards guiding his prison to secure his release but he refused because to him, escaping would speak less of him as a philosopher and he willingly drank the poison.

Socrates story is not a parable and will not be an hundred percent similar to my points but I still need to liken his time in prison and his refusal to escape to the present day depression, fear and lots of other things that lead people to commit suicide.
These issues that suicidal people feel are insurmountable could have been worked out if they had spoken out and allowed people to help them get out of the situation.
Although, people resort to suicide when they feel there’s no longer a way out but the truth is that death should not be self inflicted.

Those people that willingly put their neck in the noose, drank chemicals or slit their wrists are arguably the bravest people to have existed but the people that rised to their challenges and allowed their ego to be bruised even when they had the chance to end it all are actually the bravest people to walk the face of this earth.

For the fact that you went as far as commiting suicide, you already possessed all it takes to survive the situation that pushed you into it because that conviction that death is the last resort is enough for you to keep pushing.
So suicide might be bravery but surviving and not giving up is the act of being brave…

It is also noteworthy to say that while suicide is a menace, some of the people who successfully ended their lives probably had no control over themselves.
The major cause of suicide is depression and according to medicine, it’s a serious disease because those suffering from it are actually going through lots of pains and the happiness hormone ‘serotonin’ in their brain is no longer functioning well.
While it is true that some people intentionally killed themselves, it is possible that some had no control over it. It was their sick brain that pushed them into it.

So, if you notice anybody suffering from depression or if you yourself are suffering from it, seek help before it gets out of hand.
