The Federal Government on Wednesday has said that the University of Lagos council has the right to hire and fire but must follow due process.

This comes after the purported sacking of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, by its Governing Council.

The Federal government disclosed that it had not been briefed on the latest development by the institution.

Recall that in a statement that the Registrar and Secretary, Oladejo Azeez titled, ‘Notice to the general public on the removal of the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG’, said the VC was sacked “based on an investigation of serious acts of wrongdoing, gross misconduct, financial recklessness and abuse of office.”

However, the Director of Press in the Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Bem Goong, in a statement said while the ministry awaits proper briefing from UNILAG authorities, it was important to reaffirm that council has the power to hire and fire but must follow due process.

The statement read, “My dear colleagues, the Federal Ministry of Education wishes to state that it is yet to be briefed on the developments at the University of Lagos regarding the purported removal of the VC.

“While the ministry awaits for the proper briefing from the university authorities, it is important to reaffirm that council has the power to hire and fire, but that due process must be followed in doing so.”
