Low Turn Out Greets Ondo Council Poll As Major Parties Dump Excercise; Aketi Lauds Process

As the local government election in Ondo state is underway, low voter turn out has been reported across the state.

According to newstrack.ng, many polling units in Oba-Ile area of Akure North local government area of Ondo state were deserted by voters.

A visit to ward 9 in Oba- Ile showed that voting and accreditation have not started around 8.55am when reporters visited the unit.

Adhoc staff of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission were not available.
However some security men were seen at some polling units.

Some voters were seen standing waiting for the ODIEC officials.

The low turn out was connected to the shun which greeted the excercise by major political parties. The major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has pulled out of the contest, a situation that has made the contest less competitive.

The Zenith Labour Party will not also take part in the election.

The build-up to the election has been trailed by pockets of violence in Idanre and Ondo West Local Government areas.

The state police command has assured that it is up to the task of conducting peaceful council poll, with deployment of officers and men to the eighteen local government areas.

The Commissioner of Police, Bolaji Salami said no fewer than 7,000 security personnel have deployed to monitor the election.

Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, Prof Yomi Dinakin has assured participating political parties of neutrality.

Meanwhile, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has lauded the conduct of the local government poll, describing it as a huge success.

Governor Akeredolu voted at Ward 5, Unit 6 Ijebu Owo around 10.44 am.

He was accompanied by his Wife, Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu.
