A former Military Governor of Lagos and Imo States, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (retd.), has died at the age of 77.

He was reported to have died this morning in a hospital.

Kanu’s associate and ally, Joe Okei-Odumakin, confirmed this on Wednesday saying a statement will be released soon.

Also, a close friend from Abia State confirmed his death today, January 13, said that Kanu was in his seventies and celebrated his last birthday in November 2020.

Kanu, who was appointed into the Supreme Military Council headed by the late Head of State, Gen. Murtala Muhammed in 1975, later became a human rights activist after leaving the military.‌

He joined the pro-democracy movement, NADECO, and played a leading role in the agitation for the actualisation of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.

He fought on the Biafran side during the civil war but was reabsorbed into the Nigerian military at the end of the war in 1970.

Kanu as a retired warrior-at-sea who occupied many command and political offices as part of his military postings quickly civilianised himself when he retired from service.
