UI Cancels 2019/2020 Academic Session

The University of Ibadan (UI) has cancelled the 2019/2020 academic session.

It however, renamed it to 2020/2021 session.

The management also concluded that JAMB should not list it in its brochure for 2021/2022 session as candidates who have already registered for UI 2020/2021 Post-UTME would be taken for that session (2021/2022)

This was part of resolutions reached at a meeting of the university’s Senate held on Thursday.

The meeting, according to the Senate affirmed resumption of the institution on Monday, January 18 for the conclusion of the 2018/2019 session.

At the completion of the aborted 2018/2019 session by February, there will be a three weeks holiday followed by the resumption of the 2020/2021 session.

Monday’s resumption will herald faculty boards’ meetings for assessment and consideration of students’ results and completion of the examination for those yet to.

Another resolution at the meeting was the setting up of committees to prepare and look at the modalities for the conduct of online classes, in some departments.

In its new resolve, the institution said it will not be admitting undergraduate students who intend to gain admission into the school through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for 2021/2022.

“At its special meeting held on Monday, 11 January, 2021, the Committee of Provosts, Deans and Directors recommended the proposed Academic Calendar for 2019/2021 Session to senate for approval,” the senate wrote in a statement.

“It decided that: the 2019/2020 academic session be cancelled and the new session now renamed 2020/2021 academic session. The proposed calendar for 2019/2020 be accordingly changed to 2020/2021.

“The University should notify JAMB not to list it in its brochure for 2021/2022 session as candidates who have already registered for UI 2020/2021 Post-UTME would be taken for that session (2021/2022).”

The decision to not admit undergraduates for the 2021/2022 session, however, exempts postgraduate students and direct entry students from affiliated institutions.

It also excludes those seeking admission into the distance learning programme in its centres (DLC).

“However, affiliated institutions, distance learning centre and postgraduate college would be allowed to admit students for the 2021/2020 session,” the senate further wrote.

Earlier, students who wrote entrance exams into the varsity for 2019/2020 couldn’t resume due to ASUU’s nine-month strike.

Those who also applied to the varsity the following year for the 2020/2021 academic session were yet to write its entrance exam before ASUU shut down schools.

UI’s fresh announcement comes after JAMB opened its portal to intending applicants seeking admission into universities for the 2021/2022 academic year.

Academic activities in the university had been halted since March when the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared an indefinite strike.
