BREAKING: FG set to lift Twitter ban, gives condition

The Federal Government has given a condition to lift its indefinite suspension of Twitter in Nigeria.

It stated that , Twitter’s operations in Nigeria will be restored only if the platform can be used “responsibly.”

Minister Of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, made the disclosure during a meeting with the envoys of US, UK, Canada and the European Union (UN).

Asked when the ban will be lifted, Onyeama said there is no definite timeline for that, but added: “The condition would be responsible use of the social media and that really has to be it.”

“We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing; why we have taken this measure is to stop them to be used as platforms for destabilisation and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities,” he also said.

Recall that the federal government earlier summoned the envoys of US, UK, Canada and the European Union (UN) over their comments on the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria.

In a joint statement, the missions had expressed disappointment in the government’s decision to suspend the use of Twitter in the country.

The federal government announced the suspension of Twitter in the country on Friday.

The suspension came after a controversial tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari was taken down by the social media platform.
