Nigeria joins four other countries that have banned Twitter

The Africa giant, Nigeria has joined countries like North Korea, Iran, China and Turkmenistan in banning access to Twitter.

Nigeria on Friday took the decision following the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, announcement during a press conference.

Mohammed cited the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence as reason for the suspension.

Egypt, Turkey and the United Kingdom have temporarily suspended the use of Twitter.

In China, major companies and national media access the social media site through a government-approved VPN.

Iran blocked Twitter during the 2009 presidential election, due to fear of protests being organized. Although the ban on Twitter and Facebook was lifted briefly in September 2013, within a day they were blocked again.

In April 2016, North Korea started to block Twitter “in a move underscoring its concern with the spread of online information.”
