Tension In Enugu As IPOB Enforces Sit-At-Home Order

There was tension and apprehension in parts of Enugu metropolis and other areas of Enugu State, South East Nigeria, Monday as suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB returned to the streets to enforce the long suspended Monday’s sit-at-home order.

Residents and people doing businesses in areas such as Topland, Mayor, Agbani road, Amaechi – Akwanawa road, NOWAS in Trans-Ekulu area and Abakpa, reported of sporadic shootings by some hoodlums who tried to enforce the Monday’s sit-at-home order, despite having been since cancelled by IPOB.

The hoodlums who violently disrupted vehicular movements along the busy Enugu – Porthacurt expressway, burnt a tricyle and a commuter Sienna bus, also destroyed several other vehicles forcing residents who came out for their daily activities to scamper for safety.

A source at Agbani in Nkanu West Local Government Area which hosts the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT told journalists that suspected IPOB militias who attempted to enforce the suspended weekly Monday’s sit-at-home action, shot indiscriminately, disrupting economic and social activities in the University town.

The Police in Enugu say it has restored order and normalcy to the areas.

A statement by the State Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe quotes the Commissioner of Police as urging citizens to go about their legitimate duties without fears of intimidations.

The proscribed IPOB through its spokesperson, Emma Powerful had announced the suspension of the regular sit-at-home civil action, which the separatist group had earlier ordered to be observed in the South East region of the country as a strategy to pressurising the Nigerian government to release its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu from the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.
