NLC, NUT rejects ASUSS, accuses FG of divide and rule

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ayuba Wabba has described the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, ASUSS as an illegal body and will not be recognised as a trade union by the Labour movement in Nigeria.

Ayuba Wabba, who was joined by the President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Nasir Idris, blames the emergence of the so-called splinter group of NUT on government’s determination to “divide and rule” unions.

The NUT is also accusing officials in the federal ministry education and the executive secretary of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission, Benjamin Abakpa for appointing and inaugurating the Commission’s board without inviting the NUT, which is a statutory member.

In a swift reaction, the Director Press federal ministry of education, Ben Goong said the ministry and and the National Senior Secondary Education Commission has not bridged and law as the appointment and inauguration of the Commission’s board followed extant rules and establishment act.

Meanwhile the President of The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Omaji Samuel said that only the government an determine the legality of a union.
